A detention! It might still seem funny in a way, but I was first exposed to the waste when I was about 14. My sister went to a different school and she came home with her homework. Homework was like a new discovery to me. She was being taught music and how to read music and having to recognize things I only saw on sheets – not understanding what it was about, and why they had five lines and crochets and quavers. I was never taught that. My sister’s homework taught me things like that. I was cheated.

They show the complexities of what is felt as injustice and its mitigation. They also give some idea of the many ways in which large-scale, systematic injustice is constructed out of particular differences – and, equally, how some people can find ways to deal with it. These stories were chosen to give a range of diverse points of view, but they are also in one sense very ordinary: they are drawn from my own personal circle of acquaintance. They were certainly not selected out of some larger sample of stories.

First, there is a requirement for what Young (2000: 58) calls ‘greeting’. As she points out, without acknowledgement of the other as a subject rather than an object, communication is distorted. It is equally distorted if the person is not then taken seriously.
