These granules, called by him micros m s , are obtained by water extraction of tissues, in some cases following preliminary grinding of the tissue with sand. 5% P, and are characterized as a complex of ribonucleoprotein with phospholipids the latter making up 45% of the total and consisting in part of acetalphosphatide. In the living cell they can be observed in the ultramicroscope as refractile bodies having an apparent size of 50 to 300 mp. They are said to make up about 15% of the dry weight of the cell, or about one-quarter of the dry weight of the cytoplasm.

Claude (1943,a, b) isolated another fraction from saline extracts of liver and pancreas cells which is said to contain almost exclusively the zymogen or secretory granules long known to cytologists. 3% P. Like microsomes they are ribonucleoproteipphospholipid complexes, the lipid portion representing 20-24% of the total. The d-amino acid oxidme is said to be localized in these granules, none being in the microsome fraction. Claude also finds (personal communication) that practically all of the extractable succinic dehydrogenase and cytochrome oxidase are associated with the secretion granules, very little being present in microsomes.
