The result of that activism and vigilance has facilitated the transformation of the CFAG into the CFAC. The Community Folk Art Center Today What began in a small storefront and moved into a converted auditorium with a small classroom attached, now finds itself located in a new building that allows it to function as a multidisciplinary community art center. That transformation is directly related to the relationship between Syracuse University’s Department of African American Studies and the various communities that consider the CFAC a vital facet of the Syracuse community.
The CFAC is a multidisciplinary art center and we partner in a number of different areas including exhibitions, dance classes, workshops, and art camps and in our after-school program. I have used some of these collaborations as a model of best practices and they inform our daily operations. In the following chapter I have outlined the creation of the CFAC, including some of our most successful collaborations. I have also provided an example of a university– community relationship that illustrates how not to collaborate.
The practice area was noted to be traditionally underserved by local health providers. A goal of 25 percent of the clinic’s services were designed for patients who were likely to postpone preventative and regular primary care. The goal for students who rotate through the practice was to promote interdisciplinary learning and community involvement. Within the partnership are three separate entities, all with connections to the university and designed to provide certain key elements to the practice.
